Roane County Schools is pleased to announce the interim Principal and Vice Principal of Bowers Elementary School for the Spring Semester 23-24 School year: Mrs. Alisha Thompson and Mrs. Julie Parham. Congratulations ladies! Please see a special message form each of these amazing educators:
From Alisha Thompson - Being in my 4th year at Bowers Elementary as an administrator, I have seen and experienced the heart of Harriman in the schools and out in the community. I am blessed to be a small part of the continued growth of Harriman and its most valued asset, the children. In the coming semester, we will remain steadfast in our commitment to educate, guide and love students. As an educator for more than 20 years, I believe one of the greatest forms of love is to provide and support a top notch education that will serve students for years to come. I am looking forward to
continuing this ever so important work in the coming semester.
From Julie Parham - My name is Julie Parham, and it is with great honor and pride that I have accepted the Interim Assistant Principal position at Bowers Elementary for the spring semester. I graduated from Harriman High school, and I am committed to this community. I have been an educator for 11 years, and along with the lessons learned throughout life, I know it takes a team effort to ensure our students receive the best education and support possible. Bowers Elementary is a wonderful school, and I look forward to working alongside the devoted educators, caring staff, supportive families, and the community that I have always called home.
Congratulations to OSHS Environmental Science students Jailyn Phillips and Arianna Mckenzie, who are in the 11th & 10th grades, who competed and placed 2nd in Inventanooga! - You may be asking yourself, What in the world is Inventanooga? It is the result of a semester-long project, where students identify a real-world problem and pitch their original solution. The project follows the stages of the design process: Empathy, Ideate, Define, Prototype, Test, & Pitch.
There are three project categories - Ideator, Designer, Executive - with scaffolding criteria.
This project is student-driven, wherein students develop this project from ground zero -
identifying their real-world problem - to completion - the Inventanooga pitch.

Tennessee became the 5th state to require Computer Science as a graduation requirement in High School, a Middle School requirement, and an Elementary School requirement! This all takes place starting the 2024-2025 school year! Roane County Schools, in preparation for the upcoming requirements many of our teachers have stepped to the plate and took on pilot programs to see just how to teach a new subject. Several of our teachers have already earned an additional endorsement in Computer Science in preparation for next school year. Others are enrolled now or will start the endorsement pathway this summer! We were honored yesterday with a visit from Computer Scientists from Kira- Learning who are developing the High School and Middle School course curriculum. They visited both Oliver Springs Middle School and Midway Middle School where they talked with students about their experience with the program and how they could make the program better equipped for middle school students! Chris and Jagriti, the Computer Scientists, also taught students about machine learning and AI. What an amazing opportunity for our students to be part of the development and offer suggestions to these Scientists! You can find out more about the new Computer Science requirements by searching for Tennessee Code Section 49-6-1010 - Computer science education.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hour of Code, a significant part of the movement to reduce the equity gap in Computer Science education led by Code.org and powered by community contributions. Tens of millions of students have now learned to code on platforms and tools built on Blockly, like Scratch and Code.org’s widely used computer science curriculum. You will notice that Roane County Schools have chosen to educate our youngest population of future Computer Scientist all the way through those about to spread their wings in post secondary endeavours that will require computational skills! Many of these students have spent time in a "Hour of Code" , unplugged coding activities, or learning to code with Computer Scientists from California based company Kira-Learning who visited with students from Oliver Springs Middle School and Midway Middle School. No matter the format in which our students were instructed, we know that coding will be a part of their everyday world and we are preparing them for success!
National Computer Science Education Week is being celebrated through Roane County SChools this week. The largest learning event in history, Computer Science Education Week aims to get K-12 students interested in computer coding. During the second week in December, students are encouraged to take part in an “Hour of Code.” During this event, students are literally expected to code for an hour. Along with coding, Computer Science Education Week also highlights the importance of computer science. Computer science is an important subject because it teaches problem-solving and analytical skills, and is an essential skill in the modern job market, with many scholarships out there dedicated to this area of study. Ask your child if they are participating in the "Hour of Code" this week!
